While traditional blogs like to tell you exactly where they are in their journey, I want to take you back to where I started from. I want to show my readers the wild ride from being an undergraduate pre-PT student to being a postgraduate applying to schools and figuring out my way in life to now being in physical therapy school. The journey was full of more bumps and bruises than I can count but I have been documenting every part of it since 2016. At the time, I started documenting because there were very little to no blogs that highlighted Black physical therapists. I wanted to show everyone that there are Black physical therapists out there and that everyone’s path looks different! Less than 4% of physical therapists are Black. That’s a number that shocks me and that I would like to change. I’ve always been obsessed with enamel pins to exhibit my various interests but noticed that there weren’t any to illustrate and inspire my love for physical therapy. I would wishfully draw images in my journal that I wish were pins and stickers my friends, colleagues, and I could wear on our bookbags, white coats, and other accessories. a part of my life. Growing up, I actively expressed myself through tennis, basketball, double dutch, cheerleading, and golf. While in college, fitness became a stress reliever so I made frequent trips to the gym. Eventually, it has grown to become part of who I am. Health-wise, I believe being active and eating a well-balanced diet is important to break the generational history of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol that runs in many families. Many times we can avoid these diagnoses by following the recommended diet along with frequent exercise. Many people question why I stay so committed to still working out when I am considered petite, but I am dedicated to maintaining my health no matter what body type I have. We also participated in an in-service where we were taught how to collect patient history and vitals. During the first three days, we spent time in Santa Rosa del Penon where we worked in the triage area, shadowed physicians, provided education workshops, and helped to distribute medicine in the pharmacy. I learned that access to healthcare is very limited in Santa Rosa del Peñon. We treated a lot of children who either missed school in order to be able to attend the clinic or walked a great distance just to be seen. Oftentimes,there aren’t enough medical clinics so when they do have them, it's a huge opportunity for the members of the community to get attention for their health needs. Unfortunately, the clinics themselves lack a lot of resources and are extremely under staffed. The physician density in Nicaragua is approximately 1,099 people for every one doctor.
